Turtle Odyssey is another downloadable casual cutesy platform game for PCs by Realore (I’d link to their home page but it’s crashing right now). It’s been around for a little while now and even has a sequel, which I hope to review soon. It’s got great graphics, loads of levels and all the usual stuff. My kids love it and I think it’s pretty good too.

turtleodyssey 1You play as a turtle called Ozzy who is an aging heavy metal musician - oh hang on I got that wrong; Ozzy has had his shell stolen and later discovers that some other magical amulet pieces are missing too and must go in search of them in an underwater adventure. If it sounds like Scuba in Aruba and Turtix, that’s because it is! Although this game was actually made first.

turtleodyssey 2 1Anyway, the aim is to find a certain number of red gems on each level in order to open a gate to the next level. Along the way you’ll jump on monsters heads, pick up coins, avoid spikes, use moving platforms, find secret areas and stuff like that. One thing that these games never seem to address is how come you can jump underwater just like you are really above ground, but well, it’s not exactly supposed to be realistic is it?

turtleodyssey 3 1So how does it compare against Turtix? Well the graphics aren’t quite as polished and the scrolling isn’t as smooth and the particle effects aren’t as cool. However I actually prefer the gameplay in this game, it just seems a little bit more arcadey and interesting with better level design (especially when you get onto later levels). For example you have to take in air every so often, and later levels have ladders as well. There are other little things like if you jump on a snail’s head then run into it, you automatically kick it and whilst it’s sliding along it can take out other enemies. It just slightly gets my vote over Turtix but as I’m not prepared to give it 4.5 stars I’ll have to give it the same as Turtix.

Agree? Disagree? Have your say...
