Star Blaze is a great fun sideways scrolling shooter that’s not too hard and that’s partly why I liked it so much! It’s a downloadable PC Indie game by Gladiators Software.

I got this game not long ago and played it intensely for a few days until I completed it and I enjoyed every minute - it’s a very satisfying game, perhaps due to the power ups, or the collecting of jewels, or maybe just the wholesale destruction that you cause.

starblaze2It’s a standard sideways scrolling shooter with 24 levels spread over 4 worlds. Each level has a boss too! When you destroy aliens they drop jewels that you can pickup for money. Sometimes they drop (and you can also find) various temporary powerups including repair, double damage, nitro speed, and various powerful side guns which are nice and useful :-) The level graphics are well made and include parallax scrolling backgrounds. The aliens are plentiful and varied and present different challenges - and the bosses are all different and interesting.

starblaze1When you finish a level, naturally you can go shopping! You can upgrade your engine (for speed), your shield, your guns (of course!) and you can add on side guns and rotating orbs and also powerful bombs (I didn’t use these much). Some guns are fast and weak and some are slow but very powerful. When you clear a world your craft “resets” so you get to try out a different configuration as you build up your craft again. This part of the game was good fun.

When you are nicely powered up it’s great fun just smashing through the enemies and racing around the screen picking up jewels. It was never too difficult nor too easy so I really enjoyed it all the way through. There is no joystick option, which is a bummer, but the keyboard controls were fine. So anyway I very much recommend this game for some mindless shooting fun done very well.
