Bricks of Egypt 2, by Arcadelab, is the 4th game in the “Bricks of X” series. It’s a downloadable Indie PC game and it’s really good, especially if you like old-school breakout type games that have been well modernised.

This game is very similar to Bricks of Egypt but it is easier and has some of the extra game features that can be found in Bricks of Camelot and Bricks of Atlantis. I’m not going to explain what a breakout/arkanoid type of game is because I’m sure that most of you know already; if you don’t know, then just download and play the demo!

boe2 1OK, so what’s new? Well BOE2 has floating eyes (of Horus) like the original except that instead of being a hindrance they are mostly useful. There are different coloured eyes that do different things such as fire lasers at bricks, drop brick dissolving acid, drop fire quenching water, drop bonus point items etc. and there are black eyes which drop something that kills you. These eyes are very much like the fish from Bricks of Atlantis. Also, towards then end of a level when there aren’t many bricks left, the game will help you out by dropping acid on some bricks or by generating a useful eye. The original game didn’t do this, and thus it was harder, but the Camelot and Atlantis sequels did, and I like it.

boe2 2Apart from the things that I’ve just mentioned, there is nothing really new with the game play, but a couple of other game features have been added. When you finish a batch of levels (usually 8 or 16) you get awarded a piece of plaque, which reveals part of a picture. Personally, this doesn’t do much for me, but lots of casual games do this sort of thing now. The other new feature *is* cool though – it’s a save and resume facility so that you can stop halfway through a batch of 16 levels and come back to it later. This is very useful if you are busy dad who keeps getting interrupted.

boe2 3When I first heard about BOE2 I thought “Excellent, they must have made use of modern 3D card hardware and packed it full of special fx and particles etc” but they haven’t done this, which is a bit of a shame really. The graphics are basically pixel art style all the way, which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just that the game could have been made a lot more visually exciting – much more “bling” (hmm, is that word like “so last year now”, or what?).

Anyway, it’s still a great highly playable game with 120 levels that’s worth the money in my opinion. See what you think
