There aren't all that many video games about pirates, and most of them are a bit on the dodgy side.
I found Treasure of Cutlass Reef yesterday and surprise of surprises - it's not 'alf bad!
On the surface the game is a simple shoot 'em up, destroy the other pirate ships - and there are many - then progress to the next level. The game starts to get interesting when you realise that you can shoot the cannons one at a time, or go for a full blown salvo unloading all of your weapons at once. Unfortunately, being cannons, you have to wait for them all to reload again.
Slightly more interesting is the fact that if you get close to an enemy ship then your pirates will board and and fight for the booty.
At the end of each stage you get the chance to upgrade your ship and guns and hire more pirates to help. These upgrades are essential to continue progressing as the game gets increasingly more challenging.
Unfortunately there are only a couple of types of enemy for you to challenge so after a while the battles become a test of endurance, but the whole upgrades thing makes keeps things interesting.
Treasure of Cutlass Reef is certainly worth 5 (or more) minutes of your time.

Aw Ben, you're forgetting the, without any doubt, best pirate adventure series: Monkey Island! Read more here, and join Guybrush on his adventures:
