Snow Drift is (yet) another game from the incredibly productive folks at Nitrome. To tell the truth I just can't work out how they manage to produce so many games so quickly. This must be their fourth winter themed game this month...
Anyway, Snow Drift is a platform game, bearing more than a passing resemblance to the Mario series. The game features a cute little Yeti (with no name, why couldn't they have just called him Yeti, or Bob, or something?) who you have to guide through a series of platform based levels.
Being a Nitrome game there has to be some sort of gameplay twist, and Snow Drift is no exception - you can slide. Ok - doesn't sound that big really but it's quite a nice feature, and is particularly enjoyable when you get some speed going. Attacks are also performed with the sliding technique - by pointing yourself at enemies and pushing them into the icy water below. Unfortunately the traditional platforming "jump on heads" attack is absent which makes killing enemies that shoot at you rather challenging, since you have to slide directly into their penguin bullets.
Again, like all Nitrome games, Snow Drift has a wonderful aesthetic and Bob has a great set on animations. The small touches such as the snow kicked up as he slides are wonderful. I'm also impressed with a number of the technical bits. Slopes in platform games are notoriously difficult to pull off, even more so when they are rotating blocks, but Snow Drift seems to do them well enough.
It's not a perfect game by any means, and I wonder if Nitromes increased output has reduced their time to be self critical, meaning that they are not spending as much time polishing things as they'd no doubt like, but I still enjoyed Snow Drift... if only for Bobs charming smile
