Tony Pa is well known in the Flash game development world. He makes very simple flash games that are generally an unusual take on a common format and surprisingly addictive. Recently he has been working on a series of shoot ‘em ups - minimalistically titled ShoOot (and ShoOot 2 and ShoOot 3).

The games use a very minimal visual style, reminiscent of Galaxy Wars. The player avatars are white shapes, and the enemies are coloured shapes. Shoot the coloured shapes and don’t die… and that’s the entire series wrapped up in two sentences.

  • ShoOot - was actually made about 3 years and is the first in the series. Your player character is constrained to the bottom of the screen in a space invaders style, and the enemies come from the top of the screen with new types of baddies introduced periodically. This is probably the most traditional shooter of the series.
  • ShoOot 2 is newer, released in February this year (2008 if you read this in a year or two). In ShoOot 2 you have no control over the shooting of the craft, but you can control the movement. The craft spits out bullets every few seconds from one specific side, and you have to line yourself up with the enemies as they move around the screen.
  • ShoOot 3 is the latest in the series and, in my opinion, the most fun. In ShoOot 3 you have no control over the craft, but can see where it’s going. The enemies appear in waves of different patterns and you have a limited amount of time to shooot them all, receiving extra points for wiping out each wave.

Just had a go on ShoOot 3 at work, really enjoyed it. The lack of knowing exactly where your vessel is going to turn up when each wave comes along is a cool twist, the atmosphere’s pretty out there as well, bit like Rez. Nice post!
