Webgame Wednesday : Shield Defense
People seem to be getting a little tired of the Tower Defence games - first they were a novelty, but now there are loads, and loads and loads of them. Sure, they’re fun, but I can only take so much. However taking the basic tower defence premise and turning it on it’s head is something that’s quite interesting. The mechanic works so why not add new twists to it to create something original.
So, I give to you, Shield Defense.
In Shield Defense you control the shield surrounding the tower. Rather than shooting the enemies, you must reflect their projectiles, intent on harm, back at them - destroying 12 tanks each level. As the levels progress the tanks get stronger and more varied, and the rate of fire increases. Between levels there is a store that lets you upgrade your shield, adding extra defensive abilities, including the rather handy ability to “catch” the bullets and return them as you see fit.
The graphics in the game are no more than functional, and the interface is a little clunky, but it all gets the job done and, like many tower defense games, it’s surprisingly addictive. My biggest gripe is the slow pace of the game. It would have been nice if there were slightly fewer levels and the difficulty ramped up a little quicker, or maybe if you earn slightly less money so have to upgrade slower… maybe I should try it on a harder difficulty?
