Webgame Wednesday : Reunion
Reunion is a student created flash game. Developed by Mike Bithell for his course where he is an undergraduate student at The University of Wales.
In the game you take on the role of a sleep walking boy and you have to reunite him with his run away cat. Cleverly the controls are entirely mouse based. You drag left to walk left, right to move right, up to jump, and diagonally to jump across. This works quite well although occasionally you will find yourself walking when you mean to jump.
The presentation is one of the stand out parts of this game. It’s all drawn in a very soft dreamy style, which is incredibly fitting for a game about a sleep walker. The level itself is very complex to look at yet you rarely get lost, and small touches like the fireflies showing you the way, and the introductory mini game make the whole thing feel that much more complete.
I do have a couple of minor gripes. The largest is simply the distance between “checkpoints” having to redo the rather challenging jumping sections with a control system that is not designed for accuracy is rather grating, but it’s worth persevering as the rest of the game is lovely. I’m looking forward to seeing what else Mike does.
