Webgame Wednesday – Ratmaze 2
In Ratmaze 2, perhaps unsurprisingly, you take the part of a Rat, in a maze. Also of little surprise is the fact that Ratmaze 2 is the sequel to Ratmaze (hence the number 2 at the end). The first game was interesting but it wasn’t something I would call enjoyable, in my mind it was a bit on the boring side, however Ratmaze 2 has added a whole stack of new features and toys to make the game that much more interesting.
It’s also the third game by Pixeljam, the folks that brought us Gamma Brothers (a game that, in my opinion, is well worth playing).
As with all the Pixeljam games Rat Maze 2 uses the pixel graphic style. This means making the game look incredibly simple, using the most basic shapes possible to create the characters and objects. Our heroic rat, for example, rarely takes up more than 40 pixels… which is very very small. In fact it’s amazing that the rat is recognizable at all, yet he is.
As mentioned the game takes place in a maze, and it’s a biggun. You have to navigate your way around the environment eating all of the tasty tidbits (cheese, and fruit and whatever else can be eaten) and lighting up all the letters. There are various puzzles along the way (many involving balls and holes) and there is a very tight time limit.
I have yet to complete the game.
Thankfully help is at hand, Tim at Independent Gaming has put together a map of the maze, and even recorded a video of the game being completed. I have looked at the map, and now realise I have seen most of the world… just not quickly enough to win. I haven’t watched the video though as I intend to try to complete it on my own. I have included the video below… but don’t go peeking until you have at least given the game one try.
