Inquisitive Dave is about a curious young lad named Dave, tasked with saving the world. It’s a retro styled platform adenture game and is massive amounts of fun.

With an irreverant sense of humour and a retro styled interface Inquiitive Dave has been simplified drastically from the advenure games of old. The game is controlled entirely with the arrow keys (make Dave move and jump) and an action key (pick up items, use items, look at items, talk to people etc). This simplified interface doesn’t hide the fact that you still have to explore a pretty large world finding your way through the game.

There is also a tightly integrated story. Initially I thought it would be a simple “save the world” affair, but as the game progresses (after the first boss) the story gets more complex. The story is told in a great way, you should make sure to read all of the text that get’s spat out. I won’t spoil the story by mentioning it here, but I found it to be quite clever.

Death happens a lot in Inquisitive Dave but thankfully there are many auto save points scattered around the world, so you rarely have to start from more than a screen or two back.

The game engine itself is a bit hit and miss, the collision in particular could use some tweaking. The graphics are retro inspired but they’re not done particularly well - I can’t work out if this is on purpose or simply a lack of artistic skill. There is also quite a glaring bug in it (that I stumbled upon by accident) which meant I skipped a segment of the game.

Inquisitive Dave is an unusual take on a game, and the story in particular helps to make it that much more interesting.
