Nitrome have a distinct style to their game development. It’s always obvious which games they have made and they always try to do things a little bit differently. Fat Cat is their first attempt at a shoot ‘em up - and it’s suitably good fun.

In the game you take control of two characters - Owl, who is invincible and can shoot bullets and Fat Cat, who likes cakes and needs protecting by Owl. Owl is controlled with the mouse, and he can absorb the many bullets that get fired at him which gives both massive scores, and protects Fat Cat.

Fat Cat is controlled with the keyboard (WASD or Arrows) and, after eating cake, can shoot a powerful beam that can break through blocks.

To add to the confusion of controlling two characters - there are a variety of interactive objects in the game that make things more interesting still. There are blocks you can drag around that destroy enemies, and stop bullets and lazers. There are also buttons you can press spread around the levels that change the way the owl and the pussycat interact. To add to this every 5 levels there is a boss character that you have to beat.

All these things add up to make Fat Cat a much more complicated game than the average shoot ‘em up - in fact it’s one of my favorite Nitrome games in some time.
