Webgame Wednesday : Death vs Monstars
Ever since Grid Wars was released on XBox Live there has been a glut of arena style shooters developed – in particular in Flash. Invariably they are soulless clones with little new content, imitating the glowy vector look of the original.
Thankfully Death vs Monstars brings something new to the table.
Gone are the glowing vector lines, instead replaced with cute minimally styled aliens which adds a simple charm to the levels. Add to that the in between level graphics and you give some personality to proceedings.
Gone is the complex control scheme. No longer do you need to coordinate two hands to play. Shooting is automatic so now you just have to move the mouse, clicking only when you want to lock the gun in it’s current orientation.
Gone is the linear gameplay. Levels can be replayed at any time and you now earn money whilst you play – which can be spent on upgrading your craft and weaponry.
Not only is Death vs Monstars different to it’s distant cousins it’s actually enjoyable to play as well. I always found grid wars and it’s ilk too challenging. I’ve said it before but I play games to be entertained, not punished. Death vs Monstars removes all punishment by making the game easy to play. The concept of lives has been removed and early levels can be replayed at any time to earn more money in order to upgrade your weapons and ship more easily.
