Amorphus is a free web based game. It looks pretty horrible, but don’t let superficial things like that put you off. When I first saw the man with the giant sword I felt distinctly underwhelmed, and fighting the strange green blobs was just a bit, well, boring. But as you play, more blobs spawn. You start with green but then you get orange, and yellow. A bit longer and out comes purple and blue… and a whole host of other colours. Not only are these different colours visually different but they act differently too. The yellows burst and leave a sticky mess behind that slows you down. When oranges are popped they leave a pool of acid that you should avoid at all costs.

You can see a small selection of the many beaties in the video below.

Each Amorphous mass has a different set of animations and activities, and you soon realise there is a lot more going on than you first thought. The visuals on the blobs are actually very nicely done and each species has it’s own characteristics and little touches.

Besides killing murderous multi coloured blobs you also have awards to find. You get awards for completing various unwritten tasks (kill X blobs, score X points, do a combo etc). There are a lot of awards to unlock - many people won’t get them all. There is also a bestiary where you can read the history of all of the blobs you have fought against. The level of detail is staggering.

What starts off fairly serenely soon becomes a hack and slash frenzy with you fighting to stay alive and kill the blobs.
