Age of War, it's like Age of Empires - only smaller, 2d side scrolling, browser based, and free. So not really like Age of Empires at all? But it is.
In Age of War you take the role of a warring faction who have to defend themselves from the enemy who live on the other side of the street. Protecting yourself involves building warriors who then go to fight. Killing the enemy earns you funds and experience points (XP). The money can be spent on training new warriors and building upgrades on your fortress (mostly adding weapons to it). The upgrades can be used to increase the age of your faction. You start off as cave men, and eventually work your way up to some sort of futuristic army.
Age of War is curiously addictive, despite the fact that it's very simple. Unfortunately it's also pretty easy to complete so don't expect a large amount of challenge - however with the limited amount of options available I think it lasts just the right amount of time - I'd certainly have gotten bored if it had carried on for much longer.
