Red Faction: Explosive gameplay!

Red Faction was always a game series that I felt over promised and under delivered. There was lots of talk of destructible environments making free form gameplay but you were always confined within the elements of the level design. Walls could only be broken where defined and levels were played out in a linear fashion.

The first videos of the latest game, Red Faction Guerilla, look like they have addressed some of these issues and made the game a whole lot more interactive. It's going to be interesting seeing how they confine players now - whether they have indestructible areas or confine people with water or other terrain elements, but first impressions show a much more thorough implementation.

Unfortunately I still feel a little burned by the first games. The destruction looks a lot cooler but hopefully the story has been improved in a similar fashion - then maybe it will be a game worth buying.

Yes I completed the original on PS2, the destructions were a bit limited in scope and the game was merely average. It was also one of my first experiences of using a console controller for an FPS, yuk!
