Excitebike on the N64 was a wonderful game. Strangely it brought back memories of the original, despite having very few gameplay similarities. I loved the crazy air you could get from the jumps, and the sense of control you had. It reminded me quite a bit of the equally excellent 1080 snowboarding.

The developers, Left Field Productions, have been fairly quiet ever since, not releasing anything notable - however it has recently been announced that Nitrobike, their upcoming Wii game, will be one of the first third party games to be multiplayer enabled on the Wii.

IGN recently posted an interview with James Higgins, Left Field Productions CEO, where they talk about Nitrobike.

Excitebike 64 had a very small development team. Nintendo actually loaned us one of their game gurus to help with the track designs and gameplay. Later on he left Nintendo and joined us full-time, and he helped us create our award-winning MTX Mototrax. He is now our Lead Designer on Nitrobike, and he is making sure that we live up to the high expectations that Excitebike 64 fans have for our new game.

Sounds good to me, read the full interview over on IGN.com.

Wow, this looks awesome! Bikes with nitro, real online multiplayer, crash, bump, trick, and race… it’s about time a decent motorbike game hit the Wii.

And it’s the start of the Wii online multiplayer lineup, I’m sure we’ll see more 3rd-party developers using this technology soon.
