New Nintendo gameplay videos - Zelda, and Mario

Nintendos keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) was less eventful than the Sony one, however there were some interesting things talked about.

Shigeru Miyamoto talked for a while about the inspiration for the Mii’s found on the Wii console, along with some talk about the way he develops games and how he decides if they are going to sell or not (the wife test). You can read the full Miyamoto speech over at Wonderland.

More interestingly, for gamers at least, is the release of two new trailers. One for Mario Galaxies, and one for the Legend of Zelda, the Phantom Hourglass.

The Legend of Zelda, the Phantom Hourglass

I love Zelda. I have said it a number of times and it continues to be true. I also think my DS is great, and the new Zelda looks like it will be a must have for the DS. I really like the look of the entirely stylus based controls, it brings a new control scheme to the DS but it also looks like it will work very well. The cel shading graphical style also looks like it will work really well on the DS, with the simple bold colours standing out nicely on the small screens.

Mario Galaxies

Mario Galaxies is also looking very interesting. I was dubious about this game when I first read about it but having now seen this video I am becoming interested again. My initial concerns were about the size of the levels, and the fact you are running around tiny planets with little to do, but it now looks like there are larger planets to run around as well.

Visually the game is looking great, and the space based theme has given the opportunity to do more elaborate, crazy, unique level design - with aliens, and robots making an appearance. I like the more complex intricate platforming levels of previous Mario games and can see that there are some of these throughout so this has also entered my “to purchase” list… my list is getting very long!
