Line Rider DS and Wii - First Video
Must admit I had forgotten all about this but finally it’s here. The first video of The Nintendo DS’s version of Line Rider has been released.
Before I spoil it you should check out the video so you can make up your own mind…
The video looks pretty cool on it’s own, the game now has an objective (get to the end), nicer graphics, a variety of tricks… but I can’t actually see any drawing… or lines. In my mind Line Rider became popular for two reasons, the Ease of use/ simplicity of the gameplay and the ease of sharing (showing off) your creations (via Youtube). With the DS and Wii you have the perfect consoles for ease of use, but the sharing will be a touch harder.
I think what they have looks very cool, but I’m not entirely convinced it will capture the creativity and freedom that the original excelled at. I guess we shall find out, when the game is released on both DS and Wii in the Spring of this year.

weird. This just seems to be a physics demo, yeah what happened to the line drawing and use of stylus? It doesn’t seem very long ago since I first saw the original (it probably is) and I though it would make a neat game given some kind of objectives like reach end + pick things up + perform stunts for bonus etc.
I disagree with what you said about the ease of sharing tracks.
Sharing tracks with the PC game is actually a lot harder than you might think! You need to download a screen recording program (like “camstudio” oe “hypercam”) then play the whole track through in SLOW-MO to stop the recording being too laggy! You may even need to download another program called “cheat engine” ro slow things down even more to reduce lag!
One you’ve got a raw recording, you then need to put it in windows movie maker, spend time adding titles, credits, music, whatever, create a .wmv file then upload it to youtube.
Not exactly what you might call “easy”, is it?! And as for SHARING tracks…I won’t even bother explaining how to search for the savedlines.sol file in your system’s hidden files and folders.
Seriously, sharing tracks on the DS and Wii games is going to be MUCH easier!
tomthecool » When I talked about sharing tracks I meant as videos rather than the actual track data. I appreciate that the technicalities of sharing tracks are not simple on the pc, but I actually meant something else. Sharing tracks on the Wii and DS will work perfectly… for those with a Wii or DS. IF you don’t have a Wii or DS then you will be unable to see the tracks, unless you have some sort of tv to pc linkup. The Wii and DS audience are vast but adding a price tag, and limiting it to console formats will reduce the potential viewing figures considerably. Where before you could view the tracks for free, without even playing with Linerider, you now a Wii, or DS and a copy of the game. Does that make sense?
Ben > As I explained, sharing videos with the current game is NOT as easy as it looks - although I see your point about how console compatibility could cause more problems.
To summarise, sharing track data AND videos with the (unreleased) PC version will be much easier. Sharing track data with the Wii/DS versions will also be much easier. The only grey area is recording videos from the Wii/DS so that they can be uploaded to youtube or similar…. well, let’s just hope they get it right!
I’m not completely sure, but I THINK video sharing on the (released) line rider mobile game has been made easier - so things are looking good so far from that angle!
Also, I have behind-the-scenes info that a Wii and/or DS sneak preview could be appearing on the internet any day now! Keep your eyes open!
Tom - I still see your point
FWIW I studied video editing as part of my digital art degree so know what you’re talking about.
I’m intrigued by what you’re saying about the sharing… and of course I don’t actually know what the case will be since this is all speculation. I really hope they do something great with Line Rider for the Wii and DS as I see so much potential with it.
