Jake’s Game News 4 - Retro Heaven
It’s about time I posted another game news compilation. I keep collecting all these interesting links but I’ve been too busy to write an article! So anyway this is a quickfire link fest about some Retro games that I’ve seen recently. Enjoy!
Dizzy Games
Man I used to love the Dizzy games when I was a kid. They seemed to embody cartoony fun and adventure all in one nice package, although I could never get that far. Anyway, I found a Dizzy remake compo which has 3 Dizzy games for you to play!
Lighthouse Lunacy
This Indie game has ripped it’s core concept from an old Amiga classic called Nebulus that I had many hours of frustrating fun with. You basically run around a 3D tower which, in its day, was radical. In Lighthouse Lunacy you push boxes and stuff (it’s a puzzle game, not an action game) so the gameplay is different.
Pacman-style game video
Someone has made a video (with a video camera - weird) of their Pacman-style game which they have made in BlitzMax (same language that I use). I seems pretty neat, very arcadey - so I’ll keep an eye on this one.
Javascript Lemmings
I was pretty impressed by this, the old Amiga classic Lemmings totally playable in a browser. Nicely done!
Spectrum in a browser window
Clearly I’m easily impressed but I thought that this Spectrum Simulator in a browser window was cool. I was able to play Horace Goes Skiing for the first time since I was about 10 (that’s 22 years ago!). It was one of the first games that I had for my first computer - a Spectrum 48K. There’s quite a lot of games to play, categorised by year. The only bummer is that the keys aren’t shown so you have to figure them out. Check out Ant Attack, Atic Atac, Jetpac, Manic Miner, Chuckie Egg, … actually this list is already too long, go and take a look. They’ve even got Starquake, the game I was playing when my spectrum finally died … sob
Ghost Busters II
Someone’s remade Ghost Busters II. It’s still too hard. There are some other retro and weird games on that site that you might want to try.
Treasure Tomb
Puppy games, who’ve made some excellent REtro games like Titan Attacks and Ultratron, have started a new retro game. It looks a bit like Pacman but it isn’t. Read the blog if you are interested. I’m going to be watching this one closely.
OK that’s the retro round up for now. Keep an eye out for Jake’s Game News 5 … coming soon to a browser near you.
