Gibbage - Indie portal
Here’s an envelope stuffed full of cash
I rarely (never) post press releases but since this one hits close to my heart I thought it was worthwhile. Dan Marshall from Gibbage.co.uk - the same Dan who created the game of the same name (Gibbage, not Dan) has changed his website around. Whilst still making his own games he is also working on an initiative to give Independent developers the funding they need to make their games a reality.
Based on Dans past posts I am pretty confident that the games he funds will be of the more obscure variety, championing originality and fun over commercial viability and as far as I’m concerned that is a very good thing. Whilst we do cover casual games on Binary Joy we do tend to shy away from the derivative (unless exceptional) and only talk about the games we truly enjoy. Hopefully the games Gibbage fund are going to be coming here for reviews in the future.
Website Seeks to Raise Funds to Invest in the Independent Gaming Industry
London, April 2007
There’s an awful lot of extremely talented people out there, be they coders, artists, designers or musicians, and they’re all plugging away at some lacklustre 9 – 5 in some dusty little office somewhere dreaming of making it big with the Indie title they’re secretly hammering away at in their bedrooms until the wee small hours every night.
For most, going ‘full-time’ indie is a mere pipedream. Without cash upfront, it’s difficult to be able to dedicate the amount of time and resources necessary to make something truly awesome. Frankly, this is a tragic loss for us gamers, because what these people can do with a couple of lines of code and a copy of Photoshop is nothing short of astounding.
From now on, every penny of profit generated at www.gibbage.co.uk will be plugged directly into funding future independent game projects. That doesn’t mean me hacking together some rubbishy code while slurping on caviar they’ve kindly provided, that means hiring professional artists and coders to make interesting, high-quality, funny, funky and brilliant games for everyone to enjoy.
The sort of games independent developers should be making, instead of endless grotty Match-3s.
What that means, eventually, is me ringing up a struggling band of developers somewhere and saying ‘Hey! I like the look of what you guys are doing over there. It’s fresh and funky and innovative and exciting. Here’s an envelope stuffed full of cash. Go full-time Indie and do something amazing with it.’”
If this works it’ll be completely revolutionary, and the Independent industry will start churning out the games everyone wishes they would. So head over to www.gibbage.co.uk where there’s a hand-picked selection of the very finest Indie games. Have a click around. Play some demos. Buy a slice of quirky independent fun.
