Around this time of year is when people start producing their Top 10 games of the year lists and best game awards etc. So I’ll be posting a few links that I’ve found over the next few days (along with my own summary of games that I’ve enjoyed in 2007).
GameTunnel is a well respected site that reviews “Indie” games as opposed to the more “casual/portal” type games, and they manage to find some pretty decent innovative games (and some well done clones).
They recently picked their top 5 games in the following categories: Sports, Casual, Sim, Action, Adventure, Strategy, and Role-playing. They also made some “special awards” and then did a top 10 games of 2007 list. Unsurprisingly, Aquaria won the Game of the Year award.
You can see all the nominations and awards for 2007 (and previous years) here. This list has *many* excellent games and is a great source of information for trying out games that you may like.
I’m not really into sports games but there are few casual games they’ve recommended that I’m keen to check out such as: Snapshot Adventures (photography and bird watching combined believe it or not!) , Professor Fizzwizzle and the Molten Mystery (a sequel to Professor Fizzwizzle, which I reviewed and liked a lot), and Chocolate Castle (which Ben reviewed recently).
I’m not really a fan of too many sim games either but I really ought to check out Kudos Rock Legend simply because I love cheesy 70s and 80s metal!
On the action game front, I tried out Star Defender 4 recently and really liked it, I played through the whole 1 hour demo and my finger is twitching over the buy button. It’s simple but effective and addictive. I also reviewed Jets-n-guns Gold in the summer and it is brilliant but also way hard! I haven’t tried the top 3 action games they recommend yet, the winner being Darkside, a 3D shooter where you fly around mini planetoids – be sure to check it out.
I still haven’t gotten round to check out any of the DROD games but really should by the sounds of it. Also, I haven’t checked out Knytt_Stories (which is Free by the way) but I know that everyone loves it.
I’m not big on strategy either but having said that I’ve been hopelessly addicted to Xcom and Command and Conquer in the past.
I love RPGs and I really MUST try out Aveyond 2 soon as it’s proven pretty popular (so was the original) – hmm, maybe I can get a review copy… The winning RPG was Depths of Peril which is some kind of strategy RPG and highly rated – problem is I like RPGs tooooo much and they take up tooooo much of my time!
As for the “Special Awards”, I’m keen to try out The Tuttles Madcap Misadventures because I like platform games and this one looks like it has very high production values. Note that Wonderland Adventures (programmed in Blitz3D) won the player’s choice award! Ben reviewed it here and even interviewed the developer.
I hope that you find some great games in the GameTunnel 2007 awards!
I'm an Indie game developer with a couple of titles under my belt. I've been programming for 23 years on a variety of platforms. Currently I'm using BlitzMax, which is great.
