Fracture video – destructible environments

Ooh - a game with destructible environments that looks like it may deliver. I was rather disappointed with both Red Faction and Black for under delivering on their claims of Destructible environments. They both limited the destruction to pre defined points with the levels. This limited the gameplay so that they weren't much more than your average first person shooters.

There are actually quite a few games that are being developed that are claiming destructible terrain, however as far as I'm aware this is the only game that has gameplay video live so have a watch then let me know what you think.

Fracture, being developed by Lucasarts and Day 1 Studios, is a post apocalyptic third person shoot 'em up.

Amidst a backdrop of worldwide ecological and seismological chaos in the mid-2100s, the United States has been split in two by the "Great Flood". As a result of the polar ice cap melting, the Mississippi River has destroyed the central portion of the United States, causing an ill-equipped Federal Government to fail and literally cutting the country in half. These two halves are left to fend for themselves in the aftermath.

Watching the video and viewing the screenshots it looks like the terrain in the game is simply being displaced (it looks like ripples?) rather than genuine deformation, however rocks and caves do appear to be properly destructible. I guess until I get the game in my hands I won't know for sure. It's certainly looking more impressive than the previously mentioned Black and Red Faction though.

You can read more about the game on the official Fracture website.

Duke Nukem had the first destructible environments although they were predefined. I thought it was neat the first time I blew up a fire extinguisher and it left a hole :-)
