Edge, a very popular uk video games magazine, are soon to release a special edition magazine that is all about the 100 best games ever. The top ten from the magazine (rather a large spoiler if you ask me, but I’ve seen it on other sites so don’t care) is…

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
  2. Resident Evil 4 (GameCube, PlayStation 2)
  3. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
  4. Half-Life 2 (PC)
  5. Super Mario World (Super Nintendo)
  6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)
  7. Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
  8. Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2)
  9. Tetris (Various)
  10. Super Metroid (Super Nintendo)

No surprises that the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is number 1. It’s my personal fave as well. However it’s interesting to see just how many of the top ten are Nintendo games. 5 of the top ten games are made by Nintendo themselves… in fact you could argue that they were involved with 6 of them since Tetris was clearly popularised by the Gameboy (or did Tetris make the Gameboy popular?)

So what’s your top ten video games (or just top 1)?

Bah I can never pick a top game, there are so many, and it depends what mood I’m in plus maybe what age I was at the time. For example, it may have been Turrican once, then Dungeon Master, then Doom, then Ultima VII: Serpent Isle, then Resident Evil 4, you get the idea ;-)

I never properly played FFX VII, I played it a little bit years ago (I bought it) then got distracted and lent it to someone who totally lost it and I never played it since but I had friends who obsessed over it. Maybe I should try to get it and play it on my PS2. I played FFX and that was great, very addictive.

Hey Ben, the cookies aren’t storing my name/email/url in the comments section, I’m manually having to fill them out. That’s only today though so it could be a glitch on my PC (IE6). Mind you it NEVER stores them on my Macbook, I use Mozilla Firefox on the Macbook.

GO NINTENDO!

The original Civilization and Final Fantasy are two of the best games I’ve ever played. Civ has nearly unlimited replay value (like Tetris).
There’s plenty to like about FF VII, FF X and FFXII (which I’ve just started so I’m excited it’s in the top 10), but there’s just something about the original that will always have a special place in my memories.
I’m also surprised The Sims isn’t in the top 10. Isn’t it the best selling game ever? You would think that’d have some kind of leverage.

Ryan - I get the impression the people that voted for this were more “hardcore” gamers, and not so much the sort of people who would play the Sims. It’s based on popularity rather than sales :)

Oh - and I quite like the FF series too.
